Less than an hour from Marrakech, the Agafay desert is the easiest way to get a taste of the desert during a city break. There are no big sand dunes here, but a stony landscape of ochre hills facing the High Atlas peaks, often snow-capped in winter. Here is how to get there, which activities to choose and what to know before booking an evening or a night in a desert camp. For other outings, see our day trips from Marrakech.

Agafay at a glance

Agafay is a stone desert (a "reg"), not a sand desert (an "erg") like Erg Chebbi near Merzouga. The plateau lies south-west of Marrakech, along the Amizmiz road, around the village and reservoir lake of Lalla Takerkoust. People come mainly for the sunset, motorised activities and tented camps, from simple to very luxurious.

Getting there from Marrakech

The desert starts about thirty kilometres from the city. Allow roughly 45 minutes to an hour by road depending on the camp, heading towards Lalla Takerkoust; the last stretch is often a dirt track.

Activities: quad, buggy, camel

Quad biking and buggies

Agafay's hard, rocky ground suits quad and buggy rides across the hills and dry riverbeds. Rides are led by a guide, with a helmet and a briefing before setting off; automatic quads are available for beginners. Bring a scarf against the dust and sunglasses. If you travel with children, ask each provider about minimum age and passenger rules.

Camel rides

Calmer, they usually last under an hour and often take place at sunset, when the light turns the hills pink and gold. It is the most family-friendly activity.

Lalla Takerkoust lake

On the edge of the desert, this large reservoir offers a striking contrast between blue water and arid land. There are restaurants and water sports; some tours combine the lake and Agafay on the same day.

Dinner in a tent and desert camps

The most popular option is the evening trip: leave Marrakech in the late afternoon, watch the sunset over the desert, then enjoy a Moroccan dinner in a large tent (salads, tagine or couscous, mint tea), often with live music and a campfire. You are back in Marrakech later that evening.

To make more of it, stay the night. Agafay has many camps: simple, comfortable tents or upmarket glamping with private bathrooms, pools and restaurants. Far from the city lights, the starry sky is one of the highlights of the night, along with sunrise over the Atlas.

Tip: torn between Agafay and the big dunes? Read our guide to day trips from Marrakech: Agafay fits into an evening, while Merzouga needs at least three days.

Frequently asked questions

Is Agafay a real desert?

Yes, but a stone desert: there are no big Sahara sand dunes. For those, you need to go to Merzouga or Zagora, a day's drive or more from Marrakech.

How long does it take to get to Agafay from Marrakech?

About 45 minutes to an hour by road, depending on where the camp is. Half a day or an evening is enough to enjoy it.

Is an evening or a night in Agafay better?

An evening with dinner is enough for the sunset and the atmosphere. A night in a camp adds the starry sky, the quiet and sunrise over the Atlas, with no late drive back.
